Can it un-snow?

I love snow.

Right now, I’m gazing out my apartment window at a winter landscape that’s being continually re-decorated by a steady downfall of fluffy whiteness.

In my perfect world, I’d be outside, bundled up and taking a trudge through the snow on quiet, car-less streets. Instead, I’m stuck inside just getting off of crutches after a minor medical procedure—and temporarily banned from the long walk I wish I could take.

So, I was thinking about and looking up Scriptures that mention snow, and the one that really resonated with me today is one of my favorites, Isaiah 55:10-11. The Amplified translation of this passage reads:

“For as the rain and snow come down from the heavens, and return not there again, but water the earth and make it bring forth and sprout, that it may give seed to the sower and bread to the eater, So shall My word be that goes forth out of My mouth: it shall not return to Me void [without producing any effect, useless], but it shall accomplish that which I please and purpose, and it shall prosper in the thing for which I sent it.”

The Word of God is so powerful, and I know I often don’t fully grasp its power.

But it’s by the Word that God created and sustains all things (John 1:1-3 and Hebrews 1:3). It’s the Word that became flesh in Jesus and dwelt among us (John 1:14). God has magnified His Word above His name (Psalm 138:2). The Word of God is pure, like silver refined seven times over (Psalm 12:6). God’s Word is settled forever in heaven (Psalm 119:89). And His Word will never pass away (Matthew 24:35).

Psalm 107:19-20 tells us God sends His Word and heals and delivers those who cry to Him in their trouble.

So, back to the title of this post. Can it un-snow?

As I’m looking at what’s probably a foot of snow on the ground right now, I can tell you one thing: This snow isn’t going to reverse directions and head back up to the heavens. It’s just not going to happen. Instead, it will eventually melt and water the earth. We know this. We expect it. We have faith in it.

But that’s how the Word of God is, too. Once it goes forth, it accomplishes its purpose. Always. When God says He sent His Word to heal and deliver, that means God’s Word heals and delivers. Always. The question is whether we will believe this and receive it into our own lives.

Scripture is true, but many people reject its truth and, as a result, fail to receive God’s offer of salvation. The same principle applies to any of God’s promises: They are true, but we need to believe them, regardless of what we see, feel, or experience.

Can it un-snow? It can’t.
Can God’s Word fail? It can’t.

So, when circumstances seem to say differently, whose report will we believe?

  1. I’m thinking of you and praying for you as you heal. I’m watching the snow also this afternoon and I was looking for a Bible passage that mentions snow. Thank you as always for a beautiful post with depth! I’m reminded of something my beloved Dad told me long ago “your spiritual life will keep you well.” Amen.

    1. Agreed. The Scripture is so true that we have to take every thought captive into obedience to Christ.
